MDC Alliance leaders granted bail

MDC Alliance leaders who were arrested on Friday have been granted $1 000 bail each after being charged with criminal nuisance and violating lockdown rules.
MDC Alliance Vice Presidents Tendai Biti and Lynnet Karenyi-Kore, Secretary for International Relations Gladys Hlatywayo and her deputy Lovemore Chinoputsa, Deputy Secretary-General David Chimhini and Vongai Tome were granted ZWL$1 000 bail each by Harare magistrate Bianca Makwande.

The six were arrested on Friday for contravening Statutory Instrument 99 of 2020 on Covid-19 prevention, containment and treatment with an alternative charge of criminal nuisance after allegedly convening a gathering of more than 50 people in the capital.

On the 5th of this month, the accused persons who were in the company of more than 50 other persons who are still at large gathered at Morgan Richard Tsvangirai House.

Representing the accused Beatrice Mtetwa notified the court of her intention to lay a charge against the police who handled the accused persons.

The State represented by Clemence Chimbare expressed regret over the alleged conduct, adding that the state will further investigate the matter.

The accused persons were remanded to the 24th of July and ordered not to interfere with state witnesses as part of their bail conditions.
