TWO car thieves who stole a police vehicle as cops were attending a crime scene before dumping it along Zvishavane-Masvingo highway after ransacking it, have been jailed for seven years each.

Douglas Paradza-Shumba (31) and Tarisai Elphate Moyo (34) of Mudereri Village under Chief Masunda in Zvishavane pleaded guilty when they appeared before Gweru regional magistrate Mr Morgan Nemadire yesterday.

Mr Nemadire sentenced the pair to 10 years each, but suspended two on condition of good behaviour.

He suspended another year on condition the duo restitutes Zvishavane Police $700.

The prosecutor Ms Ndamukanei Chikuni said the pair stole a Mazda B1800 truck from two police officers who were attending to a house breaking incident in Mandava high-density suburb.

They later dumped the vehicle after stealing a battery, wheel spanner and draining fuel.

Ms Chikuni said two detectives on duty received information that thieves were attempting to break into a house in Mandava.

They drove to the scene and parked their vehicle at a Methodist Church some 400 metres away so as not to alert the thieves. They walked to the house but the criminals had disappeared after failing to break in.

When the detectives returned from the house they found their vehicle missing.

The vehicle was later found dumped at Ramofu Primary School turn-off along Zvishavane-Masvingo road.
