Police in Harare last month arrested a man who had gone on a house breaking and theft spree between November last year and March this year and recovered property worth thousands of dollars.

The man, identified as Smart Deri (32), was arrested on the 24th of last month by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Marlborough after a house breaking spree in Mabelreign and the surrounding suburbs.

Deri has since been sentenced to 51 years in prison after being convicted of 17 counts of house-breaking and theft.

Deri would break into houses during weekends especially Sundays when families would be at church.

Luck however ran out for Deri on the 24th of March when detectives arrested him.

Television sets, DVD players, laptops, clothes and other household appliances valued at over US$15 000 were recovered.

CID spokesperson, Detective Inspector Ntombizodwa Chiduwuro called on owners of the property and other people whose stolen items have not yet been accounted for to come forward and identify the goods.

"We are urgin the public to report cases of house breaks so that the police will assist," she said.

House-breaking and robberies are some of the crimes of concern especially in Harare's low density suburbs.

Analysts say punitive sentences such as the 51-year jail term that has been slapped on Deri will deter would be criminals.
