POLICE and health officials at Beitbridge Border Post on Sunday intercepted an inbound bus and quarantined all 49 passengers on board and the crew as a precautionary measure after a woman believed to have flown from India boarded the bus from South Africa using a fake COVID-19 clearance certificate.

Health authorities commandeered the bus to former Rainbow Hotel, which is now operating as a COVID-19 screening and quarantine centre, and placed all passengers on quarantine as part of measures to stop the spread of the disease.

Beitbridge district medical officer Linos Samhene confirmed the development yesterday.

"The woman is reported to have travelled from India and has been put in isolation. It is understood that she came from India and stayed in South Africa before travelling on this bus," Samhene said.

"Tests would be done on all the passengers and the crew, and then a way forward will be found."

The bus was said to have been travelling from Johannesburg, South Africa, which has also been hit by a more virulent COVID-19 variant as the country is experiencing the third wave of the pandemic.
