A 29-year old Bindura man died, while his two accomplices were injured at Gatawa farm while panning for gold on Saturday.

Mashonaland Central Police Spokesperson Inspector Milton Mundembe confirmed the incident saying that Kelvin Matanda of Mupandenyama in Bindura was digging for gold with two other artisanal miners from Glendale.

"The mine shaft they were working in collapsed and Kelvin died on the spot while his two colleagues sustained injuries on their chests and back," he said.

Kelvin's corpse was retrieved by other artisanal miners.

The police are appealing to the public to desist from illegal mining especially during this COVID-19 era as illegal panners are not preventive.

Inspector Mundembe also noted that since the rains are falling, the ground is loose and this poses danger to lives.

A Gatawa farm insider alleged that about seven houses have been demolished at the farm as it is a take yours and I take mine situation as panners take turns in shafts.
