THE Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Professor Mthuli Ncube has called for the rebranding of Chimanimani as a tourist destination after the devastating Cyclone Idai.

One year after the devastating Cyclone Idai disaster, life in Chimanimani is slowly getting back to normal as the government and its development partners continue with the restoration efforts.

The current efforts have seen the reconstruction of destroyed roads and bridges, revamping of irrigation schemes while business opportunities have been availed for survivors.

Speaking after a progress assessment tour this Thursday, the Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Professor Mthuli Ncube said treasury will continue to play its part in availing funding.

"I have visited several areas here in Chimanimani and I can say there is indeed marked progress on the recovery process. I have seen bridges and almost all are nearing 100% completion.  As Finance, we will continue to avail funds as we have been doing so that we finish all these hanging projects," he said.

Professor Ncube also emphasised the need to rebrand and market Chimanimani as a potential tourism destination to empower the community given the abundance of tourism facilities in the district.

"There is also a need to kick-start tourism in the area. Chimanimani has a lot of attractive destinations and if rebranding is done communities will benefit a lot. I have also noted the need to capacitate the 13 irrigation schemes in the area" he reiterated.

Meanwhile, with some of the survivors of Cyclone Idai still housed in holding tents, Chimanimani Rural District Council has already started allocating residential stands, while construction of pre-fabricated structures in the relocation area is set to begin soon.

Professor Ncube was accompanied by the Provincial Development Coordinator, Edgars Seenza, Provincial Roads Engineer Atherton Zindoga and local legislator, Honourable Joshua Sacco.
