YOUTHS in Manicaland Province are fretting over a sharp rise in flavoured condom prices saying it tempts them into having unprotected sex, exposing them to Sexually Transmitted Diseases.

Prices of flavoured condoms (mainly Carex) — the favourite of many — have jumped from around $8 to $25 for three condoms in Mutare.

"Prices of condoms haved increased beyond our reach and this compromises our health as we end up engaging in unprotected sexual relations.

Although having sex is a choice, it has to be safe," said a Mutare Polytechnic student, who declined to be named.

The student said he had just failed to buy a packet of his favourite flavoured condoms at a pharmacy in the city.

The Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council (ZNFPC) is providing unflavoured free condoms but these are not the youths' favourite.

"The Government is committed to continue supplying condoms for free through social institutions. We supply condoms on the basis of enhancing protection and not luxury hence our condoms are not flavoured as it becomes expensive on our part.

"We have condoms for all genders and they come in different types," said ZNFPC provincial communications and marketing officer Mr Daniel Maromo.
