THE opposition MDC Alliance is seeking help from the diaspora to fund its 2023 electoral campaign, and to help it break into Zanu-PF strongholds, party secretary-general Chalton Hwende said yesterday.

He was addressing party members at a meeting in Windhoek, Namibia, where the party structures pledged R1 million towards the 2023 election campaign.

The fund is dubbed the "2023 presidential fund."

"We launched our diaspora rural mobilisation initiative. The leadership twinned with Uzumba constituency to assist turn it red (the MDC Alliance trademark colours). They also pledged R1 million towards the 2023 presidential fund," Hwende said.

Rural Zimbabwe, including constituencies such as Uzumba Maramba Pfungwe have been Zanu-PF strongholds.

Since 2000 when the MDC was formed, the opposition has failed to penetrate rural constituencies and has often blamed violence against its supporters by the ruling Zanu-PF party.

It alleges voter intimidation, partisan food distribution and use of traditional leaders to force-march villagers to vote for the ruling party, among others.
