COWDRAY Park residents in Bulawayo have raised concern over non-collection of garbage for over two years, leading to the proliferation of undesignated dumpsites that are posing a health hazard to residents.

"It has been two years since garbage collectors came to Esigodweni area. We don't understand what is happening," Sandile Moyo, a resident told Southern Eye.

Another resident, Melo Dube told this paper that they pay for rubbish collection as part of their rates.

"People are now dumping rubbish everywhere. Some of the rubbish is being dumped at undeveloped stands without the knowledge of the owners. This is because people have nowhere to dump their rubbish as there is no garbage collection," Dube said.

"We pay rates monthly, yet the service has not been rendered to us for two years. Someone has to explain how garbage collection fees are being used since we are not getting services."

Bulawayo mayor Solomon Mguni, however, expressed ignorance about the challenges faced by Cowdray Park residents.

"I am not aware of what is happening in Cowdray Park. I will send people there to see what exactly is happening. To my knowledge, garbage must be collected every week like in any other area," Mguni said.

"The garbage has to be collected in Cowdray Park like in any other place in town. We have constructed roads and any vehicle should be able to move around, including garbage collectors."
