Justice Clement Phiri of the Harare High Court has died, the Judicial Service Commission confirmed on Monday.

Justice Phiri, who has been a High Court judge since 2015, died at his home in Marondera on Sunday night, days after he and his family tested positive for Covid-19.

JSC spokesperson Rumbidzai Takawira said: "I can confirm that Justice Phiri has, sadly, died. We are in communication with the family and will release more details soon."

Last year, Justice Phiri had a part of his foot amputated after suffering a mystery illness. He was yet to return to work.

On Sunday, Zimbabwe reported 115 new Covid-19 infections and 24 deaths. To date, the country has seen 33,388 cases, of which 1,217 have resulted in deaths.

In a bid to curb the virus spread, Chief Justice Luke Malaba recently banned face-to-face court hearings except in urgent applications and bail applications. Trials were deferred to until after a Covid-19 lockdown which has been extended to February 15.
