Kalidou Koulibaly, Mohammed Salah, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Riyad Mahrez and Sadio Mane have been shortlisted for the Ballon d'Or award scheduled for the 2nd of December.
Since its inception in 1956 only one African player has ever won the prestigious award, George Weah in 1995.

However, history is about to repeat itself as there is a high chance of an African player walking away with the Ballon d'Or.

Although many football analysts are vying for Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and the current Ballon d'Or champion, Virgil van Dijk as the outmate contenders former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger sees that differently.

"Mane is the outstanding character, I would say because he is a fighter and efficient, he is not scared of anybody. At the moment, he deserves huge credit," said Wenger.

20 year old Villarreal and Nigerian winger Samuel Chukwueze is the only African who was nominated for the Kopa Trophy which is presented to the best performing player under the age of 21 and is selected by former Ballon d'Or winners.
