A SOLDIER and a police officer accused of assaulting a Bulawayo resident while enforcing Covid-19 regulations have applied for discharge saying there is no proof they committed the crime.

Obvious Nkomo (33), who is based at Induna Barracks 11 Combat Group, and Dennis Maturi (45), of Njube Police Station, denied the assault charge when they appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Jaconiah Ncube.

They were remanded to August 6 for judgement after the defence lawyers requested time to file their application for discharge by June 13 while the state is expected to file its response on June 15.

Prosecutors said the two assaulted Winston Chadomba of Mpopoma on May 1 at around 5pm near Sidudla Bar in Njube while they were escorting a truck selling subsidised mealie-meal and doing routine checks.

Maturi allegedly assaulted Chadomba with open hands and Nkomo joined in beating the complainant with the butt of a gun and open hands.
